Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates, based in Gevrey-Chambertin and run today by Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle. With just over 15 hectares of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, the domaine is renowned for producing Pinot Noir of unmatched finesse, longevity, and purity.
The approach is minimal intervention: careful hand-harvesting, partial destemming depending on the vintage, indigenous yeast fermentation, and ageing in Burgundian pièces, with a restrained use of new oak. This results in wines that translate terroir with breathtaking precision.
Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2016 – The Jewel of Gevrey
The Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is considered by many the crown jewel of Domaine Rousseau. The Clos de Bèze vineyard, planted with old-vine Pinot Noir, sits on limestone-rich marl soils that yield wines of remarkable complexity and elegance.
The 2016 vintage is a study in balance after a challenging year marked by spring frost and a sunny, dry summer. Yields were low, concentration was high, and the wines have extraordinary depth.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet hue. Aromas of wild strawberries, black cherries, rose petals, Asian spices, and subtle forest floor unfold with every swirl. The palate is silky yet powerful, with perfectly integrated tannins, a fine acid spine, and a mineral-laced, endless finish. This is a wine for decades, with its peak drinking window stretching 2030–2050+.
Perfect pairing: Bresse pigeon, venison with black truffle, or simply enjoyed contemplatively on its own. Serve at 16–17°C in large Burgundy stems.
